How a “365 Slow Cooker Suppers” Cookbook Review Inspired Me

October 12, 2013 by Joanne T Ferguson

Cookbook-review-Slow-Cooker-Sloppy-JoesHands up who has been excited to try a new slow cooker recipe only to get all the ingredients, follow the recipe as written and the results are…mmmmm “less than ordinary”? (Aussie lingo for terrible)

That’s A LOT of hands I see in Computerland!

This could NOT be said about the recipes (with mouth-water photos by Tara Donne )

about Stephanie O’Dea’s newest Cookbook 365 Slow Cooker Suppers!

Courtesy of “New York best selling author, slow cooking expert and mom of three,” Stephanie O’Dea and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 365 Slow Cooker Suppers is a “must have” for any slow cooker enthusiastic!

Stephanie’s philosophy via her very informative and fun website “is simple shortcuts for you and your family.”

Previously known as TheCrockPot Lady, in 2008 Stephanie made a New Year’s Resolution blog post to use her slow cooker “every single day for a year!”

What a challenge!
Here is Stephanie’s 2008 Flashback, The Entire Year, in order!

365 Slow Cooker Suppers includes Soups & Stews, Beans, Poultry, Beef & Lamb, Pork, Sandwiches, Meatless and Fish.

I must admit, I was “transformed” into that child of five with food wonderment and surprise!

I can’t tell you HOW many times I “S-L-O-W-L-Y and EXCITEDLY” (yes, I S-Q-U-E-A-L-E-D too! lol) viewed each and every recipe and the very “warm and welcoming photographs.”

You can only imagine my dilemma when EVERY recipe was “Y-E-L-L-I-N-G!”, “PICK ME!!! PICK ME!!!

Please tell me that I am not the only one who “hears” food photos and recipes YELLING (sometimes loudly lol)?

While it is honestly difficult to pick my favorite section, it seemed I was “naturally drawn” to Sandwiches!

It was then (with tears of joy), I read out each of Stephanie’s recipes: (to name a few)

American Football Barbeque Beef Sandwiches:
I remembered my first tailgate party with my oldest brother now passed away.

Coney Island Hot Dogs:
As a child in primary school, Princess Svetlana (of Lucky “Peeking” Peking Pork fame lol) and I were invited to the very first Nathan’s Restaurant (an “authentic only in America story) on Long Island in New York. We could eat anything we wanted on the day! Needless to say, we remember Coney Island Hot Dogs vividly and have visited Coney Island many times with many wonderful memories!

Old-Fashioned Barbeque Pulled Pork Sandwiches:
I remembered as a child being invited to “the most magical” block parties by my Fairy Godmother who lived in Brooklyn where I tasted my first Old-Fashioned Barbeque Pulled Pork Sandwich.

For those unfamiliar with block parties, it is where neighbors of all countries, religions, and ethnic backgrounds come together to celebrate with food, music and festivities.

The block my Fairy Godmother lived on was closed off (via a special permit every year) and everyone participated by opening their doors and kitchens, setting up tables of foods in front of their house for free to share their love and their sense of community.

Can you “feel” WHAT Stephanie’s “truly wonderful,” “kitchen well-tested” 365 Slow Cooker Suppers recipes mean to me?

Here’s a personal and genuine hint and tip:

365 Slow Cooker Suppers, Stephanie’s first cookbook Make It Fast, Cook It Slow (“delicious, nutritious, gluten-free recipes”) and Spiral Bound Totally Together:  Shortcuts to an Organised Life (combines practical planning “managing priorities” preventing people from “making a mountain out of a molehill”); all three can be purchased together via Amazon.

How much is YOUR time worth in learning new ways to save time and money while making “absolutely delicious” slow cooker recipes?

Food and childhood memories obviously made an impression on me! 🙂

“Which of Stephanie’s recipes did you pick?”, I “hear” you say!

Thank you for “nudging” me on my way!

When I saw Stephanie’s Dr. Pepper Sloppy Joes, I “knew” THAT would be the recipe!

While American foods and drinks are continuing to find their way to Australia, there are not a lot of places (especially locally) that stock Dr. Pepper!
Dr-Pepper-soda-jpgLuckily, when I was having A Trip Down Memory Lane, I remembered they sold the original bottles of Dr. Pepper!

As you know my passion for recycling, this was a bonus for me to see!
Soda-Dr-PepperPrincess Svetlana and I used to “sing and dance” the Dr. Pepper song QUITE animatedly!

I can STILL today!

We even called the local radio station one midnight (mind you, we were still in primary school and was “allowed” to stay up) to sing the jingle from the tv commercial to try and win a Dr. Pepper t-shirt! lol.

While we did not win the t-shirt, the DJ was “great amused” and sent us both out a consolation prize!

Oh, the things (as “if” it was yesterday), I can remember about the wonderful memories of Princess Svetlana and me!

Princess Svetlana’s dad (Fisherman Bob) used to make THE BEST Sloppy Joes!

When he would ask Princess Svetlana and I what we wanted for dinner, we would YELL in unison, “SLOPPY JOES!” lol lol lol

Lucky for me, Stephanie O’Dea was not sitting in front of me asking which recipe I would like to make as I um, well, “might” have been tempted to YELL out, “DR. PEPPER SLOPPY JOES!”

While my lips are sealed (only when I am not eating and talking; which is quite a lot lol), with Stephanie’s Dr. Pepper Sloppy Joes recipe, my yellow mustard ingredient caused a smile today for Princess Svetlana and me!
Mustard-Coney-IslandHow a “365 Slow Cooker Suppers” Review Inspired Me:
“savored the flavor” of each page’s recipe...YUM!
— Stephanie’s recipes and photos got me (even more) excited about slow cooking, and what with my slow cooker I CAN do!
— to appreciate my food past, food people and food memories…PRICELESS!
— Stephanie’s slow cooker hints, tips and verdicts “felt” like Stephanie was talking personally to me! (you’ll just have to buy 365 Slow Cooker Suppers)
— while I don’t personally make New Year’s Resolutions, I admire Stephanie for her inspiration, determination and achieving her new Year’s Resolution using the slow cooker every day for 365 days!

MY VERDICT: Stephanie’s Dr. Pepper Sloppy Joes recipe was moist, tasty as can be! Chef Georgio aka hubby devoured (a number lol) with love enthusiastically! Stephanie’s Dr. Pepper Sloppy Joes recipe was not too sweet (was genuinely surprised) and was (for me) the perfect balance of “slightly sweet with a tangy flavor.”

I can’t wait to try Stephanie’s 365 Slow Cooker Suppers Moo Shoo Pork recipe!

WAIT until Princess Svetlana hears about this as was one of our favorite dishes at one of our favorite restaurants in Chinatown in New York City!

I adore my slow cooker, I’ve made so many things in it this year. It’s absolutely sensational to come home to the amazing aromas wafting from it. I have to admit I was dubious about the pop mixed into this recipe, but your accolades have won me over.
