Let’s for a moment, understand and acknowledge the significance and origins of Christmas for the Christian communities worldwide.
Religion aside, what I love about this time of year is how people of all countries, cultures, and religions “make and take” time to reunite with ol’ (notice I did not mention old lol) friends by calling, having that cuppa (Aussie lingo for a coffee), sharing family recipes handed down from previous generations (like Mum’s Special Spice Cake) and especially creating unique holiday gifts like these Very Merry Fondant #Christmas Cupcakes!
Recently, I was invited by Appliances Online to celebrate their 8th Birthday; they heard I love parties and am always looking to celebrate; especially birthdays!
NOTE to readers: Birthday coming in late January!
As part of their celebrations, we were all asked to decorate a cake (which was created in the shape of the sponsors appliances; Sunbeam, Breville, Morphy Richards and Tefal) with fondant.
I knew NOTHING about fondant or anything to do with decorating with fondant, but thought I would give it my best!
My new friend Helen from Recycled Interiors and I were pretty “chuffed” (Aussie lingo for pretty happy) with our Sunbeam Blender with a Movember “healthy fruit and vegetables” twist.
All this fondant decorating was possible to “the very lovely, very patient and talented fondant guide Belinda” from Metro Designer Cakes by Belinda.
I did apologize to Belinda (and Helen too!) for S-Q-U-E-A-L-I-N-G with delight on the day, because not only was it for a great Appliances Online birthday celebration, but it was HEAPS of fun!
Courtesy of Belinda from Metro Designer Cakes by Belinda, I was invited to participate in her Novelty Fondant Christmas Cupcake Class!
I S-Q-U-E-A-L-E-D with delight as if I was five; as mickeydownunder (as I am known in the food world), love doing cartwheel S-Q-U-E-A-L-S of delight too!
On the day, I “tried” my best to act a tad more mature than five, but as soon as our group started to create, the S-Q-U-E-A-L um, well, sort of slipped out of me! lol
Luckily for me, the group understood my PASSION and ENTHUSIASM for all things food; and now fondant!
Look forward to next to what I do; coming soon via blog post!
For today, let me stay focused (lol) on what “the lovely, very patient and talented fondant guide Belinda” was able to help us all create!
First of all, I really enjoyed learning more about fondant; what it is, how to make, what is available commercially to purchase.
It was very helpful when Belinda shared how using the proper tools will enhance any fondant experience; saving time and money, but helpful for experienced fondant creators or newbies like me!
I initially thought “just” take a knife, put some stuff (didn’t even know what kind of stuff lol) on top of the cupcake, doing that Betty Crocker swirl and that would be pretty much it! lol
For those unfamiliar with the Better Crocker swirl, in the States, Betty Crocker has her own product line of cakes, cupcakes and pre-made icing. With the icing, all you have to do is whip it out of the can, put as much as you want on the cupcake and twirl the cupcake without taking the cake with it too!
When I was little, Princess Svetlana (of Halloween’s All About Tradition and Food Fun fame lol) and I used to make imaginary cupcakes in our Betty Crocker stove; hence we topped our imaginary cupcakes with icing and did the Betty Crocker Swirl! lol
Oh, how I get distracted with it comes to all things fun and food!
Belinda next shared with us the secret ratio formula for making white and dark chocolate ganashe, but you will not get me to “spill the beans” aka sharing the secret.
Belinda was very patient in helping us all to understand “how” important it is to properly seal the cupcake and if you remember nothing else, take it from me…water brushed onto fondant does indeed help to make it stick! lol
We all took turns reminding each other of this!
What a fun group we had and it was nice meeting new people who started out as strangers and now became fondant friends all thanks to Belinda.
I loved the “powder puff” suggestion provided by Belinda so as to work on many different colored fondants and not affect the coloring; some more prone to absorbing cornstarch; hence lessening the bright colors one may want to achieve.
Trust me local South Australians, WHEN you experience Belinda’s future novelty cupcake classes, you will be S-Q-U-E-A-L-I-N-G and YELLING out like you were five again too!
Belinda “assured” our group, she has seen and heard the signs of E-X-C-I-T-E-M-E-N-T before!
Father Christmas as he is known here; Santa Claus in the States, started looking like an angel with wings lol
Before I made some “slight” adjustments to the size of the nose and mouth; all in the group “giggily” agreed!
I bet YOU are wondering HOW I attached the antlers and ears, eh?
No reindeer secrets will be spilled to you today!
Perhaps after a South Australian red wine (BIG FAN!) or two….lol
Ask my friends, they’ll tell you secrets are sealed with me, but it would be fun if you would entice me with a wine!
I’ll share A Very Merry Fondant Christmas Cupcake with you!
Looks like Father Christmas is sharing a “Holly Jolly” laughter of congratulations how my Christmas Fondant Pudding was done; again thanks to Belinda’s guidance!
Pssst….don’t tell Belinda, her demonstrations are very easy to follow and honestly, if I can make these, so can YOU!
Lastly I learned about mat impressions and how to apply them using fondant as well as how to apply certain shimmer; there’s a secret you know! lol lol
All in all, it was GREAT fun and I think by reading my post today, you can “sense” that I had A Very Merry Fondant Christmas Cupcake Class!
I am being honest, they are a “tad” labor intensive to do, but not overwhelming!
It gave me a greater appreciation for the time and creativity that goes into each and every cupcake and why they are priced like they are too!
For local South Australians, if you are running out of time, stressing about the pending Christmas celebrations, parties and the dreaded “What should I bring?”, why not Skype or call Belinda from Metro Designer Cakes by Belinda today!
The smiles created by Belinda’s cupcakes and cakes are priceless and create the most wonder party, birthday or holiday memory!
All cupcakes from the class come with instructions to take home and Belinda is always available for any questions you have.
I can’t WAIT until her next series of classes which include making 2 Tiered Wedding Cakes, and Large Flower Classes to name a few!
Metro Designer Cakes by Belinda also does adult and children’s parties.
Stuck for that last minute gift?
Am sure a gift voucher to a class wouldn’t go astray for someone who you think would “S-Q-U-E-A-L with excitement” too!
I would HIGHLY recommend locals experience a novelty cupcake class!
The words and E-X-C-I-T-E-M-E-N-T are my own and have not be influenced in any way based on attending this fondant Christmas cupcake class via Belinda’s courtesy!
All comments brighten my day too!
